Two Thousand Volunteers in National Parks for 2008

More than two thousand people did volunteer work in protected areas of Costa Rica in 2008, which exceeds their involvement in 2007 by hundreds.

This was held by Cecilia Montero, manager of the Protected Areas of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC by its initials in Spanish), and Luis Matarrita, director of the Association of Volunteers for Protected Areas (ASVO by its initials in Spanish), one of the largest and oldest organizations that coordinates volunteers in Costa Rica since 1989.

According to experts, the voluntary collaboration for this year was given especially in areas where there are beaches and forests, like Corcovado, Cape Blanco and Manuel Antonio, as well as sea turtle spawning sites and volcanoes in the country such as the Irazu and Arenal volcanoes.

Half of the employees were domestic and the other half foreigners. 80% of the volunteers were women.

”We loved the experience, watching a turtle lay eggs and helping save the turtle eggs so that turtles can be born is an unforgettable moment that can change your whole life,” said Barbara Torres, Costa Rican volunteer in Ostional, Guanacaste, who was part of the volunteer program for active students at the University of Costa Rica (UCR by its initials in Spanish).

”One knows very little about volcanoes but when you sleep next to them and feel the rumble at night, it means that they are alive and are fabulous. As the advertisement says: this is priceless!” joked Mike Davidson, Swedish volunteer who was in the Arenal volcano.

If you would like to take these holidays and volunteer, you must meet four requirements: being older than 18 years of age and have a good health insurance policy, pay for your food, which ranges between 3,000 and 4000 colones per day, and be willing to work at least six hours per day for at least a week.

In all cases, recruitment is easy. People just have to access an online form at sites like www.asvo.org (or the organization of their choice) and they must present two passport photos, photocopy of identity card and a delinquency history. You can access organized tours or offer assistance under your own possibilities.

Accredited organizations in Costa Rica are: Asvo, Asociación Conservacionista, Programa para la Conservación de las Tortugas Marinas del Caribe Sur, Raleigh Internacional, Voluntarios y Proyectos, Hospedaje Casa Escazú, Tropical Adventures, Reto Juvenil and the UCR volunteer program.

In SINAC, you can call 2257-9722 or at ASVO you can call 2258-4430 or email leninf@asvocr.org.

”Volunteering provides the opportunity to visit the parks in an inexpensive manner and it offers the satisfaction of helping in their conservation,” said Matarrita. In addition, the card allows volunteers to enter the national parks for free.

This is labor to which TicosLand.com invites everyone who has the possibility to do so. It is the opportunity to learn about the parks, to spend a few days there and learn everything they offer. It is something you never forget and makes it possible to find the answers to so many questions about how a forest functions.
