ICE will pay for the right to use the railway.
As a way to have exclusive use of the land on both sides of the railroad in Costa Rica, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE by its initials in Spanish) agreed to pay to the Costa Rican Railroad Institute (Incofer by its initials in Spanish) for the right to use the railway land.
The agreement implies that it will have a right of service or use of the land on both sides of the railway along the 500 existing kilometers in Costa Rica. The amount the ICE will pay is $1 million per year.
This right will allow the ICE to work to install fiber optics, broadband or any other task for the improvement of telecommunications, electricity or information technology.
The chairman of Incofer, Miguel Carabaguíaz, indicated that this agreement will allow the ICE to install aerial or underground cables to improve services. It can do this on either side of the tracks, thus making the Incofer the only provider of land for such work.
As a counterpart to this proposal, the Incofer will also have the technological advances available that could be used in the modernization of the railways.
Carabaguíaz referred to this as technology "planting" and it can be done in areas such as Limon, Valle de la Estrella, Matina, Guapiles, Siquirres, Turrialba, Orotina, San Jose, Heredia, San Antonio de Belen, Golfito and Palmares.
The work will be performed in Costa Rica by officials from both entities. The agreement was signed for one year and can be extended thereafter. The revenue generated by this payment will be used to improve the railway infrastructure, growth, staff training and the purchase of new equipment, among others, which would form part of the process of modernizing the national rail system.
Pedro Pablo Quirós, president of the ICE, said the agreement will contribute to the improvement and strengthening of services.
At TicosLand.com we see this initiative with hope because it would be ideal to bring greater accessibility to services such as Internet to areas that are far from the metropolitan area, thus advancing the project to bring technology close to all the regions of Costa Rica.
