Two Costa Ricans are among the 100 most influential people in America.
As a way to pay tribute to those who deserve it, the American Capital of Culture Organization along with the international channel Antena 3, had a contest to elect the 100 people who have most influenced the culture of Latin America.
After six months of discussion, (people could cast the vote via the Internet,) the choice was Pablo Neruda and Gabriel García Márquez in first and second place respectively, leaving the writers at the head because of their power and influence.
The first ten places are occupied by Octavio Paz, Jorge Luis Borges, Ruben Dario and Gabriela Mistral, the latter as the most influential woman.
It is important to mention that Costa Rica took part in the election as did two Costa Ricans chosen on the list, but it is important to note that the contest included singers from different genres such as Carlos Gardel, the Peruvian Chabuca Granda and the Colombians Juanes, Shakira and Ricardo Arjona.
There are also actors on the list such as Mario Moreno “Cantinflas” and artists such as Frida Khalo, Fernando Botero and Quino.
There is no doubt that revolutionary politicians were also present, including Simón Bolívar, Ernesto Che Guevara, Benito Juárez and Rigoberta Menchú, among others.
But as we said, Costa Rica came out with two names on the list whose biography can be found on the website of the organization, http://www.cac-acc.org.
The Costa Ricans are José María “Pepe” Figueres Ferrer in 25th place and Carmen Lyra in 94th.
Figueres Ferrer, or Don Pepe as he is called in his biography, is presented as a politician, thinker and humanist. His Presidential work and academic profile are shown together, and among his achievements are the establishment of several independent institutions in Costa Rica and the abolition of the army.
In the case of Carmen Lyra, allusion is made to her ideological struggle, but it emphasizes her literary contributions. It mentions her book, Cuentos de mi tía Panchita or Tales of My Aunt Panchita, where they say it succeeds in recreating a world of fantasy in the reader's imagination that might be their reality no matter their social or economic class.
In this way our compatriots, people born and raised in Costa Rica, will be presented in informative capsules, as part of an advertising campaign to those who tune in to Antena 3 in Spain, the United States and 19 Latin American countries
The list was presented in Brasilia, the American Culture Capital in 2008 as a way to promote Latin American integration in the cultural field.
At TicosLand.com, we are proud to know that two great people from our country’s history, but we know there are many more that could be examples because their work and career. However, by popular vote, the two already mentioned are on the list for the entire continent.
