Drink designed in EARTH will arrive soon.
In the Agricultural School of the Humid Tropical Region (EARTH by its initials in Spanish) in Limon, Costa Rica, nothing in life is impossible for any student, claims Sebastian Arrieta, a young man who is 21 years old.
This thought led him to propose a new graduation project, which would end in November. His idea is to develop beverages that offer a sensation similar to soft drinks but are nutritious.
The main ingredients in the beverages that this university student is developing are fruit from the humid tropic which should be high in fiber, nutrition and anti-oxidants. They include the soursop, noni and plum, but he has used blue corn and also plans to experiment with white and yellow corn.
Arrieta said that because of his research, he has read much on soft drinks and is concerned about the consequences that these products have on people, so his goal is to “simulate the sensations that are caused by these products but with nutritious drinks, in order to reduce their consumption little by little.” For this reason, he plans to include carbonated water in the preparation of the formula.
The young man said that the main challenge he faced at the beginning of his research was getting someone to believe in him. This happens often in Costa Rica and it is why many young men and women give up trying to move their creative project forward.
“It was difficult to get started because I began from scratch. In general, the teacher gives my fellow students a theme with defined objectives. In my case, it was not that way, so I had to sit down with my advisers and “sell” them on the idea. Now I have a lot of support.” He said.
Students at EARTH receive $100 (about ¢52,380) to fund their research. Arrieta can also use the laboratories at the university and request materials.
For the team at TicosLand.com, this type of proposals continues to demonstrate the national talent, as did the Chemistry Olympiad and the Expo-Science Fair. We must support these young people so that they can excel and make their dreams come true. They will also set the name of Costa Rica very high.
