740 companies will pay income taxes through digital taxation system.
At the end of the year in Costa Rica, large companies and large local contributors may submit their income tax statements from 2008 through the digital taxation system.
The vice minister of Finance, Jenny Phillips, said that she expects to be able to launch this project on November 20, although it is only an estimated date.
Digital taxation is a system that will allow taxpayers to process their taxes over the Internet.
Some of the things they may do is open a household customer account (number that is assigned to each checking or savings account) to authorize the Ministry of Finance to receive future tax payments from the customer’s accounts, register as a taxpayer, make legal consultations , request a tax refund and print statements.
The first to use this system in Costa Rica will be some 740 companies that belong to major contributors. The plan is to start with the sales tax on December 1.
To be able to start with each form of taxation, according to Phillips, it is necessary to refine the information of each contributor, without any inconsistency so that it can be moved to the new system.
Refine means that what each taxpayer owes or is owed, as well as his personal information, must be very clear.
At present, some taxpayers use the wrong id number or they present two statements for the same month which would generate difficulties for the new system.
Although it was estimated that this project would begin sooner in Costa Rica, it could not because it took longer than anticipated to receive the approval of the Comptroller. Therefore, the providers of the hardware said that they would not send the equipment without prior approval.
It is hoped that the system will be functional on Nov. 20 for the income and sales taxes and then the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage consumption tax would be added.
Digital taxation is the biggest project that the Finance Ministry is pushing in order to improve tax collection, make the process easier for taxpayers and obtain large amounts of additional information.
TicosLand.com sees this project as a breakthrough. Among the criteria that give a country a better position for competitiveness is the simplification of formalities in the process of paying taxes. It is clear that this system offers better conditions and facilitates payment.
